Wrong Way Farm Stay

Short Overview – The Odyssey

I was recently an accomplice to the signing of a 30 year leasehold on roughly 5 hectares of land on the Bolaven Plateau, Laos. For those of you who never went metric, that’s a little more than 12 acres. I was looking for a waterfall in a temperate environment not too far away from the various tropical places I’ve been known to dwell in. Well, the secret, I figured, was to go up. And up. And that brought me to this Arabica coffee-friendly place, at 1,200 meters, with well over 3 meters of annual rainfall (roughly equivalent to the Hoh Rain Forest in the Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, but it’s at the same latitude as Honduras). The mean annual temperature is a refreshing 19.5 degrees C (67 degrees F).

This 14 meter high waterfall is right in the middle of my site

The idea started off being pretty simple. Find a village off the grid with a waterfall or otherwise good source for hydro power, provide this power to the village, and in return they let me play around on some common land. But like most simple, neat, plans, it turned out to be a good bit different from what I intended. I never imagined that I’d end up conspiring to manage a coffee plantation along with the other projects I had in mind, but it couldn’t have been a more perfect counterpart. Here are the components in the overall project. Each component has its own page and there’s also a category for each on my blog.

Before you jump into the project categories, though, you may wish to learn more about the location of my site. You can check out the Bolaven Plateau and specific information about My Site by following the links in the submenu above.

Oh, and by the way, while I surely intend to have lodging, a real farm stay, it will probably take me as long to get that far as it took Homer to write his Odyssey. So, you are welcome to stop by and watch the progress, but there won’t be accommodation for quite a while. There might be other things of interest, though.
